How do you get rid of material splotches?

in a render or in the texture itself?

If in a render, I've had this in the past with low IRmap settings and Objects with VRayLightMtl applied. Up the settings and it gets less noticeable (enable direct light in vraylightmtl and put sibdivs anything above 64)
