  • 3DS max: switching views with hotkeys does not remember prvious state of view

I tend to work in one maximized viewport and switch views using hotkey shortcuts. When I switch views this way, each view (top, left, front...) gets reset to an arbitrary state where I'm zoomed into some (apparently) random place in the model rather than the way it was previously. So each time I switch views I have to zoom to the extents of the model, and then zoom into something similar to the way I had that view set up previously. Multiplied by the hundreds of times I go through this every day it is taking years off my life I've tried one script to fix this call pro viewport switcher but it didn't work properly in max 2012. Does anyone know of a good script to make views remember their previous state, this would save much time and frustration. Cheers.

    Rob,

I had this issue when moving from an older version of max. Drove me mad. I ended up changing the shortcut keys 1,2,3, and 4 to active viewport 1,2,3,4

Why they changed this after all these years and didn't give us some sort of legacy option is so beyond me that I really can't think about it too long.

I can assure you this would never have happened during the original development of 3DS Max, which I participated in.

What I do is have a hot key that toggles min/max of the viewports. After I get all my viewports set up and I am working in a maximized viewport and want to switch, I simply hit the min/max toggle, right click in the viewport I want to go to, and toggle again.

More work than before, but it works well and it is fast. Geoff's way looks pretty good too, I might try that one as well...

After trying a couple of scripts I found 'Legacy Viewport Switcher': http://area.autodesk.com/forum/autod...-switcher-lvs/ that solved the problem for me. I initially had to set up hotkeys for the the LVS version of each view, then setup the 4 non-maximized viewports with top, front, ortho, left (going clockwise) which I think is default anyway. Then switching views in a maximized viewport worked exactly the way I wanted it to. Each view comes in exactly the way I left it, including if it was shaded or wireframe. Much better the the way Max viewports work my default.

Alan I wish the original development team was back in charge, there was a time when Max development made so much sense, but now each release makes me scratch my head and wonder what is Autodesk thinking.

Just found this. Not tried it yet. Not keen on the LVS one. Distracting IMO
