  • what codec to use for screen recording?

    Hi all

So I've tried Camstudio, Koyote Screen Recording and also Fraps, but none of them give me small file sizes with the default settings. As far as I know, XVid will give smallest file sizes, but for the life of me I can't get it to work with Xvid.
Camstudio supposedly has its own lossless codec, but under settings under the codecs, I dont see it there.

Please help with some suggestions. (not I have to stay with free software so Camtasia is not an option)
    Kind Regards,
    Morne

ok best results so far is with microsoft expressions encoder 4 standard (it is what the new windows media encoder is called)
You can also do some very limited editing with it like add stuff to the beginning of the timeline etc. It saves out VC1 so that's a bargain. For MP4 you need the pro version
Pity they dont allow H.264 encoding in the standard version

The only app that worked for me is Camstasia.
Camstudio has all this codec trouble.
Exporting mp4 from Camstasia is "good enough": http://youtu.be/250YsxSPR-E

Those results looks pretty awesome. Trouble is that Camtasia is not a free product

I have not tried this myself yet, but i have been sent here: http://compression.ru/video/ls-codec..._codec_en.html

Also the Camtasia Codec is a free download, so is that not an option?

          Regards,
          Thorsten

            You mean the Techsmith codec?
Camtasia is not free, but the codec is?

The codec is only a decoder, not an encoder it seems

yes I've tried it also just now, but when you actually do the recording, a message comes up telling you to purchase and install Camtasia
