Is it something like the 3ds max ee scetch up or dunno wot they call it soft to scan and create real geometry ?

hehe.. excellent.. this is just like the "kinekt fusion" demo that microsoft have been showing around.. ive been waiting to get my hands on something to test.. this looks like what ive been waiting for.

I have played a little with it, and my main gripe is that it automatically defines a max extents bounding box when you start scanning, making it rather limited in use, combined with the fact that the kinect sensor needs better fidelity, and is rather clumsy so move around as it needs extra power if connected to a pc. It also disregards the rgb info, so you only get the mesh.
The MS KinectFusion demo looks alot better imho, as you would expect from the company that actualy deisgned the thing (not developed).

but, the potential is huge. I'm thinking scanning as-built conditions for remodel projects.

I've been playing with it since it's release a few weeks back and it's really fun and has a lot of potential. It needs a bunch more stuff but for just releasing and being free it's pretty great so far.

It's only been out a few weeks and they are adding features all the time. In the next few weeks they say they will have a feature that will let you scan scenes much bigger and at higher resolutions than you can now. They have already made the volume and volume resolutions user definable so you are no longer limited to the 1x1x1 or was it 2x2x2 meter volume the original version was set to. Now you can put any size volume you want even if it doesn't work. It's much more flexible already. They say they plan to add support for capturing textures but are focused on the mesh capture still.

The Kinect doesn't seem like it's capable of capturing fine detail with out modding but it's only $100 new. ReconstructMe also supports the ASUS scanner which sounds like it's very similar to the Kinect but has the advantage of being a bit smaller and only needs USB power.

Also while the MS Kinectfusion demo looks really cool it's not available in any form is it? I've been seeing lots of great kinect 3d capture demos in the last year but haven't found anything better or easier to get up and running than ReconstructMe yet.

It really isn't to useful yet but at the rate they are improving it I don't think it will be long before it will be. I've managed to capture a full body scan of a persion standing and print them in 3d. It did take a fair amount of clean up the mesh but it worked fine. The only other tool I've used that comes close so far is Project Photofly now called 123d catch. It does capture textures and can capture at almost any scale. But 123d catch is not as fast and gets confused by things that reconstructMe handles pretty well like shiny surfaces. ReconstructMe does a much better job at getting most undercuts and stuff that seems to get missed of smoothed out a lot by 123d catch. Still 123d catch is more user friendly and useful right now.

I think if Autodesk can put out the version of 123d catch that can use a kinect like they show in one of their tech demos http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbuem8ANPWQ it would be a much better option than reconstructMe in it's current form. They are both really cool and fun but need a lot of improving.

I'd like to do some tests with kinect but I've read that someone can't use no more the kinect sensor with xbox after some tests with xbox kinect connected to pc.
I suppose it's only one of the internet myths.
Could you confirm that there are not any problem using xbox kinect with pc??

                Thanks in advance.

About 123d catch I did some tests and the best feature is that you have the texture onto the 3d model but about the 3d model reconstruction I have to admit that it's very unstable with the results.
Sometimes it's perfect, sometimes really not and you have to redo photos and waist time to send photos to autodesk cloud.

When reconstructMe will put textures onto the 3d models I think it's perfect.
One "funny" thing about the kinect scanning is that if you want more precision, you can use your eyeglasses... no more blinded kinect..

I got my Kinect mostly in anticipation of some easy to use 3d scanning software. I used it on the xbox a little but but not much. Now I use it a lot but only playing around scanning stuff. Mostly testing ReconstructMe as they release updates. I don't know if I will ever hook it back up to my xbox. I can give it a try this weekend to see if it still works with the xbox. Seems like a myth though but I don't really care since I may never use it with the xbox again.

I think both the ReconstructMe and 123D catch software have good and bad. I really want the combination of them both like in the video I linked to above.

They say the glasses mod for ReconstructMe only sort of works as the glasses distort things enough that they can't do a full scan. I think almost all of the glasses scans are from a mostly one side. Maybe in future releases they can figure out how to compensate for the distortion the glasses cause.

The other nice thing about ReconstructMe is that it's not only for the Kinect. They say they can support any device that can capture depth information on the fly. So if it catches on maybe someone will figure out how to make an inexpensive high resolution scanner that works with it.
