  • Amazon computing servers n vray

    Heya

I've decided to give it a go and see how it goes. I got feed up with 10h render times per image so fingers cross...

In any case is there a way to use my vray license on amazon servers for slave rendering? Or I have to go to the dark side?

Yes, and many people have done that. It is no different than setting up your V-Ray license for use at home - you just need to make sure that your V-Ray license server is visible through the internet, and then you need to set up the machines on the cloud to use your license server machine.

This is by far the most detailed explanation I can find online. But it's not directly related to VRay. Hope if someone did the same thing with VRay, he can shed some light in here.

Is it not obvious? Once you create the virtual machine image with 3ds Max installed, you can install V-Ray on it and point it to your license server. From then on, things are more or less the same, at least when rendering through backburner.

No, there is no need for a VPN. How to make the license server visible from the outside depends entirely on how your network is set up - I'm afraid I can't really be much of a help there. For my network at home it is a matter of setting up the router to let through communication on port 30304. For our office network, I have to ask our sysadmin to do that for me.

If you still have issues, for experimental purposes we can set up a temporary license server in our office that you can use.

                Best regards,
                Vlado

Is this only applicable for Max and Vray? Or for Maya and EDU Vray it's pretty the same way to set up?

I think its for all vray licenses that use this port/or similar port that u can find in manual...

I've just started my amazon server gonna try it on over next few hours.

Cool. Hope it works for you there. Look forward to hearing how it turns out!

doesn't this only really work if you have a lightning fast internet connection?
Here even on a 4mb line, I can foresee major slowdowns when renderering a 300mb max file and getting back the resulting EXR files of say 500mb each
                        Kind Regards,
                        Morne

                          Heya

I've done Mental ray tests yesterday...
A 10k image, 3gb EXRs render output files...
It took 2.5h to render - I should threw more instances =D
The files transfered to my FTP in like 10 min, and 10 min later I had them on my HDD...

Its as fast as ur Internet connection... so its not so bad, and if u do something wrong when submiting u can always edit it on spot there and re-submit.

In any case I haven't had luck with VR license, also I got a bit worried to do it over Internet since if I lose connection (and I did yesterday auc...) my slaved would stop and I would lost ££... , anyway is there a way to set up DR to automatically pick all available servers from BB ? I have feeling using DR on amazon might be a bit tricky since I don't open max scenes there... Just transfer my Backburner zip file and then magic happens...

V-Ray only checks for a license at the start of the rendering; if the machines start the render and the license gets dropped they will still finish the render.

Nope; backburner has no API that would allow us to do that.

You could do DR through backburner as well; the only thing I'm not sure about is to get a list of available DR servers... I'll have to play with this a bit.
