I know ColorEdge is vray compatible and I also think it's an excellent plugin however I have a minor issue with how it works.
I had a look at your demo max file and realised that the path is a separate piece of geometry placed above the grass and the smooth blending of the grass to the path is actually opacity. I intend to use this effect on alot of the geometry in my scenes so, it would become very complicated very quickly if I had to place geometry on-top of all the geometry that I wanted to blend the edge.
If this could be sorted out that would be great but, I understand that it's a free plugin and that you have to concentrate on the software that makes you money.
I don't thing the plugin is broken, that's just how it works. It would be nice to have a way to easly blend materials that meet.... That would be wonderful.

In this case, we used two separated objects with a opacity map, but there is not problem using ColorEdge to blend two textures in the same object: just use it as mask in a Mix, Composite or VRayBlendMtl.
Did you take a look at GradientEdge ? (http://www.vg2max.spb.ru/GradientEdge.htm)
It colors around open or selected edges, between different smoothing groups or based on coplanar faces. It's not free though !!

Does Gradient edge work well ? and with render nodes ? I may need this plugin to create a dusty edge to a series of flat objects. Any feedback on its performance within vray would be appreciated.
I use neil blevins corner edge to vertex colour script but you need support edges. Works well. Or you could manually paint the verticies but again you need enough geometry.
I also have f-edge, a solution for non turbosmoothed geometry. This uses smoothing groups but I've not really put it through it's paces yet.
