The global rendering setting in slate is so frustrating. I can't believe there isn't a function that automatically updates the material you have selected but none of the others :S

I can't use the new editor, I feel like an idiot, zooming in and out like in a viewport and connecting this fiddly wires.
But I'm usually rather managing materials than creating new complex shaders. I wish there was a listview based material editor, like the layer manager (but not as crappy).Marc Lorenz

Does working in direct 3D instead of nitrous changes things ? In my last projects I've met so much unbelievables problems when working with nitrous.. Windows hangings for minutes, material editor crashing, crashes on save..
And I do'nt speak of the UNUSABLE vray frame buffer, if nitrous is on. I seriously hope it will be fixed in max 2013.

I felt frustrated too when I had to switch to 2012 in the company I am freelancing. (I had to switch from 2011)
But I completely understand your disapointment switching from max 9.
By best advise will be "Stay away from Nitrous and disable all the fancy-sounding features such as Ao and shadows etc)
Slate material editor made me very excited when it was first out.
Though it is a great feature in concept, it is not handy and user friendly at all.for my blog and tutorials:

Does anyone know what happened to Discreet people? Are they employed in Autodesk now ?
When Autodesk bough 3dsmax, did those people start to work in Autodesk as well?
I feel the answer is no because there is a big change in the path of the development of software.for my blog and tutorials:

Max was always Autodesk, the Discrete name on it was only for branding. The dev team for Max were Autodesk employees after the Yost groups contract ended. So basically, and this is a guess, from max 1.2 or max 3 onwards the max team from Kinetix right through to now, were Autodesk employees. Two heads are better than one ...
....but some head is better than none.....

It's also crashed more times in 3 days than 12 did in 3 months.

I must be working in a version of 2012 that no one else has! Everything works perfectly with nitrous/high poly counts. I have no problems with the VFB slow down.
2013 is looking promising too. Everything feels nice and snappy.
