  • Filleting edges of simple sink

How would you fillet the edges of this simple sink poly object? If I select all the edges and choose 'chamfer' and then up the number of divisions, you got awful, messy corners.

Hi Tricky, you need to do a little rebuilding to remove the diagonal edges which go out to the corners - slice it up to look like the attached, you should then be able to chamfer away...

I think I've actually sussed it - selecting the 'loop' edges around each corner helps a lot.

Thanks Chris - I did wonder about that. Appreciated.

The way Chris suggests is the more correct way. I usually do what Chris does, then do an extrude with height set to 0, and width to the Maximum width of the chamfer, then do a chamfer.

            Hi Tricky

I thought you said you guys model in AutoCAD? Doing a fillet of that in AutoCAD is pretty simple and would give better results

We do our architectural modelling in Autocad, but we sometimes model 'bits and pieces' in Max for...speed! lol. Yes, I could do it in Autocad very easily, but I am just pushing my own little envelope!!

I recently saw somewhere a "quad fillet" plugin for I think it was 30 euros or something (not sure of the price now).
It apparently helps with the headaches from filliting corners that result in bad geometry. This thing apparently fillets and always results in correct quad polys and no bad geometry. Looks interesting.
                Haven't tried it myself though...
                Kind Regards,

I think I came accross that in the past, but wasn't sure about spending the cash on something like that. I guess I assumed (wrongly) that max might have inbuilt tools to achieve a similar result quickly.

yes I would just use AutoCAD for this. Some things just work better in AutoCAD. That being said, when they rewrote the 3D engine of AutoCAD since 2004 version, some tings just dont work as it should or like it did. Extrude being one of them. They introduced sweep which sort of replaced extrude, but extrude use to just work so much better on paths. Now extrude is totally useless fro complex paths. It either flips your profile by the time you get to the other side of the path, or it scales it. But sweep works ok, just sometimes miss the simplicity of the old extrude. One thing that annoys me is when you do complex union or subtraction, I have to sometimes do an object in sections, as it refuses to union complex parts sometimes, especially if you have lot of curves.
I also sent you a PM
                    Kind Regards,

It's 30 euros, unless you purchased the original script version, in which case it's 10.

polysolid is helpful, especially with curved forms.
