  • Vray for maya 2013 - few questions

    Heya

I'm in a transition moment In my live where to I move from Max to maya as well as from Mental ray maya to vray...

I was wondering is there a way to set up a refl/refra trace depth to 0 so that I can render only diffuse channels ?

I have quite simple and complicated workflow to get me very quickly what I need in mental ray, I was wondering if its possible to do the same for Vray - I know I cant do it for 3ds max vray....

In basics I need to create render layers with just diffuse, reflection, refraction without the need to calculate other parameters and waste a bit of time...

I dont have vray for maya 2013 yet so its still "??" for me if its economical to get or no...

I assume render layers, and overides works just as well as with mental ray ?

    Thanks, bye.

We use overrides all the time to turn stuff on and off for different layers. Like GI, filepaths, blabla. And there's a Reflection/Refraction checkbox in the globals, so I'm pretty sure you'll get what you want (at least) as fast as in mray.

      Heya

I just checked Vray at work. Yea I do can get the 0 refra/reflection which is pretty cool ! Any plans on separating them + adding diffuse rays ?

      Thanks, bye.

        Heya

How well is Vray described in Python in Maya? Do we get echo commands with python etc etc?

        Thanks, bye.

V-Ray is mostly MEL; Python was not available when we started and afterwards it was too late to rework everything Still, you can call MEL functions from Python, so I don't know if that matters. There isn't a lot of scripting involved when using V-Ray.

          Best regards,

Hmm interesting. Will have to test it out at work. I've scripted our automated workflow for maya mental ray here, would be nice if I could do it in pythom for Vray.

I guess there are no docs for vray python ?

            Thanks, bye.
