  • RAM issue

Has anybody come across this? I removed 6 sticks of 2GB ram, and replaced it with 6 sticks of 4GB ram. With the 6-4GB my machine will not boot, but when I take 2-4GB and replace it with 2-2GB, it boots fine. I checked all the ram, and they all work, they just don't work together. Could it be a power issue? Is there something in the BIOS (I haven't looked yet) that would dictate how much ram?

Was this a 6x4GB ram kit or did you buy them separately? I'm no expert but it's the first thing that comes to mind.. RAM should always be bought in kits.

it was a kit. I'll see if there is a motherboard update, or something. Thanks!

I guess it wasn't a kit, just 6 4GB sticks from the same place.

some motherboards have ram limits, so though you can put lots of ram sticks in them, they cannot support more then a certain amount of ram in them (I believe). That's why many prefer server boards, those support tons of ram.

my specs say up to 24Gb, so that shouldn't be an issue.

try making your ram run a littler slower. it may help with getting it to run better.

Actually, there's a chance that it's still an issue. There more RAM you need, the more relevant it becomes you get RAM officially supported by your motherboard (or vice versa).. meaning to be sure it works you'd have to contact Kingston or Corsair or whatever and ask if they have kits that support your mobo. Last I upgraded there was even the option to ask if they could make a kit specifically for my motherboard, and even then there was a slight chance it would not work because of reasons like the mobo being manufactured on the wrong day of the week or some magic like that. I'm sorry I didn't post this earlier, I didn't think you'd be that quick to order new RAM.. here's to hoping you get it right the first time. It was a pain to discover this by trial and error.
