  • Past client returns

I got a call last week, from a past client who I did a ton of work for, couple years ago. Apparently, he had to lay off his draftsmen, because he was out of work. It seems he stopped using my services because his draftsmen, who I helped learn Revit, was doing some low-end rendering, which seemed to be enough to show his client his design intent. My past client said, "your work is a ten, and my draftsmen work was a 3, but it was good enough". Mind you, it took twice as long to produce the 3-quality work, but his guy was salary, so it didn't hurt as much. My client also said he is still using the work I provided him to get new work, but they were not able to produce the same quality for new jobs, so his clients were getting upset. I know the trend was, "it's good enough", but I am wondering if that trend was short lived.

Anyway, I thought I would share my story. Long story short, my past client mentioned is sending me a large project this week

It's a tough one alright. I had a chat with the 3dsmax developers last year and one thing they mentioned is that they'd love to throw out a load of very old features in the program, but there'll always be someone that relies on that one feature. Giving someone something is fine, but try to take it away and you've got a huge fight on your hands! Your client advertising using your old renderings is a bit harmful too, people might feel a bit cheated or make them less trustful if he promises one thing and delivers another - it'll make them more wary of the other areas of his work and make the process less relaxed.
