  • AE LWF workflow

When rendering to EXR files using a standard LWF technique, they come into After Effects washed out (double gamma). You can cure this by either checking "Preserve RGB" in the file's Color Management properties, or by adding a 0.4545 gamma correction to the track.

My question is: does the first option, checking "Preserve RGB," knock the file down to 8-bit? I'm asking because checking that makes the 32-bit Linear Light options gray out.

    Thanks.

When you save image in 3ds max. When u pick EXR extension, click anywhere on the window and there should be a grayed out gamma settings at the bottom become active. Type there gamma 1.0 I believe or 2.2 and your exr will be fine again. U have to do it for render layers too if you have added them b4 saving file.

    Thanks, bye.

The EXRs I am making are coming out of the VRay Frame Buffer. There is no such option there.

umh... They has to be from vBuffer?

As to doing it in AE. u can just rerender it with reduced gamma. But as far as I remember Adobe software is bad at fixing gamma... They tend to mess up saturation.

Ooh, I just found that I can get around the gamma problem altogether by rendering to .vrimg files first and then setting the gamma to 2.2 when I convert them to .exr files.
