that's what I also usually do, unless the poly it's particularly intricate (or at advanced stage of modelling), and it's just easier to use the slice modifier and do a bit of clean up afterwards..

What I do : in polygon (or element) mode, deselect everything, place the slice plane where you want it using snaps, then disable the slice plane, select polygons you want to slice, then re-enable the slice plane. PITA but beats having to resort to booleans along with the inevitable vertex cleanup that results from using that...
I've noticed this happening too. Is this a new 2012 bug or something? So annoying...

Sometimes if that happens then you can try quickslice instead and if it still won't snap with polygons selected then try quickslice in vertex mode. Usually that will work but sometimes you have to connect the new verts manually.

    eh, it's fixed now.

you'll probably have to break all the verts, lower the edge and bridge the gap thats created when you lower the edge in question. This will result in 5 sided faces on the sides (not that it's a big problem)

I have managed to slice the object within editable poly, aligning to a tape (useful tip). I then want to simply move one of the the top polys downwards. In doing this, it creates some annoying triangles. I can of course delete all these faces and recreate, but thats just annoying. Whats a better way?

here's a quick one. didn't use any modifier, and didn't cut through the poly either. just connected edges, aligned and deleted polygons.

Normal aligning a slice plane and using the tape to align is a new trick for me too :P
To be honest, I think you can still align the editable poly slice plane to a tape too. I dont think it only works with the modifier. Give it a shot.

OK, so you have used a slice modifier. I was trying to do this using the slice option within editable poly. However, your method seems to work just fine. wILL GIVE THAT A TRY. Oops - sorry for shouting

Check this out. I've aligned the slice modifier to the tape using the 'match x axis' (if i remember correctly).

I think this is what you're asking for, yes? Then break, the verts, move your faces, bridge/cap and weld. bam done.
Will take a look - thanks mate. You'd think after 15+ years of this stuff I'd know how to do it!?!?

Or you can draw a tape along the edge I've indicated here, align the slice plane to the tape using the align tool and matching its orientation before continuing on. OR you can actually use the normal align tool with the slice modifier, but it has to be across two different objects. You could just clone the object while you need it for the aligning operation.
