  • calling all networking nerds.

ive got a pair of machines connected via infiniband adapters.. point to point link. one of the machines is conected to my router via ethernet. obviously there are not a lot of people with infiniband around, but if we ignore that aspect and assume its all connected via ethernet, im trying to get both machines to see each other, and also both see the internet connection.

after fannying round for what seems like weeks ( im a trial and error kinda guy when it comes to networking, it all seem so unnecessarily complicated) trying various combinations of automatic or fixed ip configurations, bridged network adapters, internet connection sharing, homegroups blah blah, its working... kinda. to be honest its been working a few times but it seems unreliable and im sure settings ive tried in the past work now when they didnt before, and vice versa.

anyway, basically ive finally got both machines talking to each other, sharing a homegroup, and sharing an internet connection... BUT, if you look at the two attached images, when i start the machines, it sees the two adapters, then after thinking for a few seconds, groups them under one network, and it all works as it should.

however, after seemingly random amounts of time, it will revert back to two seperate networks, one of them listed as "public" i can still see the other machines drives, and remote desktop to it, and even deadline works, but DR stops, and i lose the internet connection on the second machine. the second machine still shows as being part of the same network as it did before.

ethernet port (internet connection) is set to full auto on ip settings.

infiniband adapter on main machine has ip and subnet specified

infiniband adapter on second machine is set to full auto.

these settings are a bit odd, but they worked so i left them. but they only work a bit.

it may well be a problem with the infiniband IP drivers or something, but it could be some stupid mistake im making in the config.. so please, if you know how to set up network adapters/windows to work with a config like this (1 machine with 2 network ports, one connected to router, the other to a slave machine) please help

of course if there is an infiniband geek around, even better, but i think they are quite rare.
Working...
