  • System freezing when hitting memory limit. Xeon specific? Any solutions?

I'm experiencing complete system OS UI freeze when max/vray hits the memory limit of the system (24gb). I typically work with 2 copies of max open plus nuke so this can happen fairly easily if I'm not keeping an eye on things.
The scenes I'm working on have many huge texturemaps in complex multi depth vrayblend maps and composite maps.
I'm working onsite with a dual xeon workstation so would expect the system to handle hitting the memory limit; my workstation at home is a i7 and it carries on quite happily when I exceed the memory limit... it gets a bit slow, but at least I can still access the OS to do other things... with this workstation I can't even move the mouse pointer!

All my maps are loaded with the HDRI loader so other than reducing the texture resolution there's not much I can do to reduce the memory requirements of the scenes.

So, has anyone else experienced this, and if so did you find out a solution that doesn't involve upgrading my memory?
    Many Thanks
    Patrick

I don't know weather its a xeon related issue at all. It could be that the paging size is set to work differently on your xeon then on your i7.

Good point Dmitry, I can't change my paging file till the IT guy comes in to test this, but will update the thread when I get him to up the limit.
The workstation currently has the same pagefile size as the system memory; ie 24gb. I hope upping this fixes the problem!
      Thanks
