exr render elements opening blank.

I've got a render, which looks good, and all my render elements, which don't. They opened up blank in photoshop, and in fusion (and ps after the exr fix) with a kind of haggard alpha which selected objects to remove at random.

Each one is over 200mb, so the information I want is clearly there - I just don't know how to get to it. Any ideas?

No idea what it is but I've had a tonne of EXR problems recently - images getting additional weird channels written in to them and so on. Might be a render node thing or a deadline thing though.

After figuring out that the ram player can read the files, I opened them and re-saved them, and it turns out this is the information that got saved.

any ideas how to make sure this doesnt happen again, anyone?
