color correction

any tips in color correction in post? I am not talking about basic color theory; I am talking about mid-tones, highlights, and shadows. The tutorial I have seen basically show adding blues to shadows, and yellows to highlights. They don't actually say that, but in a sense, that is what they are doing. So, it seems they are not thinking the shadows need more blue, because they are to yellow, they are following some kind of rule-of-thumb. Any tips?

Cool shadows and warm mid-tones seems to be the traditional norm but some artist are coming up with some interesting combinations. I usually do a few variations and in actual fact going super warm in my shadows and cool in my mid-tones is my preferred look.

Viktor Fretyan who is now at MIR is a master at colour grading. Do a search for some of his work and tutorials. Some of the ones I've found are:
