  • Anyone tried this CPU

Looking to expand my farm, but don't have enough space. I found this cpu by amd - Opteron 6282 bulldozer, 16 core at 2.6 ghz, and was wondering if any one has any experience with it and using vray. I remember a while back there was some issues where amd produced different results then intel. I have all intels now and would like to sort it out before buying anything.

I think the issue with mixing intel and amd machines in a network scenario is with procedurals only, if I remember correctly. The issue being that each processor does certain calculations differently that affect procedurals which use randomized values for certain attributes. I personally don't use anything procedural - only texture maps. However, that's not to say that you won't notice differences with regular materials or other things such as animation etc. Who knows... maybe someone can clarify? I'd love to know myself! It's all about risk...

As for performance of these recent AMD machines, same as ever - cheaper, better value for money (generally) but slower, hotter and probably noisier, on the whole. Bang-for-buck AMD is slightly better, but if you want fewer machines in your network doing more work then Intel is the way forward - they'll also likely run a little cooler, which can mean cheaper electricity bills.

Also - note that 1 x 16-core AMD CPU does not mean double the performance/speed of 1 x 8-core Intel CPU. Recent Intel CPUs totally trump the recent AMDs on core-for-core basis in scenarios such as multithreaded rendering which we're talking about here. It could be the case that a single overclocked 6-core Intel (3930k for example, at 4.5ghz) could outperform a single 16-core AMD even if overclocked also.

Personally I wouldn't mix the two. Not worth the potential major headache of having a bunch of different buckets. It's not like the intels are much more expensive anyway. Frankly a little extra cash for peace of mind and better performance plus cooler running plus cheaper electricity bills = best result, for me.
