  • Peter Guthrie vs Hyperfocal HDRI

    Hi all

When we do stills, we mostly render at 4K and,
I'm looking into getting some HDRI's. The ones from Peter looks very good and is very highly rated and recommended by various users and also they are the ones I'm leaning towards. I was just wondering what people think of the ones from Hyperfocal? The ones from Hyperfocal is more expensive but double the res.
    Kind Regards,
    Morne

You should try and make your own - its really not that tricky if you have a decent DSLR

Less effort to buy some good ones that have been tried and tested

I have some of both...but hard to compare as I have not really done any meaningful comparisons...have not even tried them in the same scene yet.
Overall, I am pleased with both, but I do seem to use Peter's more often.

I have both Peter's and Hyperfocal's and both work but to nitpick I would really hesitate to call either of them high dynamic range enough to be called HDR because you need to resort to workarounds like a direct light for sunlight or lowering your gamma (and thus not only getting more pronounced sunlight but affecting shadows in a way) to get the desired effect. I mean yeah they have more range than a 8 bit JPG but if they do not deliver out of the box then what is the purpose of calling them HDR images in a field where HDRI is interpreted as a way of lighting a digital scene in a way that captures the natural lighting?

Anyways, in addition to the ones already mentioned I would recommend the ones Suurland has at www.cg-source.com , many of those produce nice sharp shadows and the backplates are good also.

I actually prefer them like this, I like having the extra control.

I know what you mean, it's just that for this kind of control you don't necessarily need 32-bit images.

+1 they are very good. I think Peter's are among the nicest I have seen from an aesthetic viewpoint, but which is just as important (if not more)

                          Please make some more Thomas!

I agree with Brett that Peters HDRI are very nice when it comes to their visual appeal.

Pixelbox, I will.. But it's so damn cold at the moment, standing on a hill top for hours is best done when it's not -5°c
