  • Wacom Cintiq 24HD Touch - a word of warning

I am not one to really get into hardware reviews etc, but this situation has really pissed me off and wanted to share so other here could hopefully avoid the same waste of major cash

I bought a new Cintiq a month or two ago and opted for the Touch. I should have known better since there were problem even with the demo unit and and my reseller really didn't seem to know what was going on, or actually care much, but it turned out to be much worse than I anticipated. Anyway, I *love* my Cintiq 21 (I have had 2 so far) and the Cintiq format is a great way to work - but the Touch functionality adds $1000 (Canadian) to the unit and it basically needs to be turned off at all times.

I'm running Windows 8, and from what I have heard it works at least somewhat better on a Mac, but to date the integration is pitiful. Useless (literally) in Photoshop, useless in Max, and it doesn't even work well with the OS or web browsing. I literally have to leave it turned off virtually all the time to avoid problems.

Support from my reseller was zero, and from Wacom has been poor. I have dealt with a few people there now and after they all get through making me reinstall the same drivers over and over again they come around to saying the same things.

    1) It's new tech so we are still working out the kinks
    2) Software vendors have to build in better support.
    3) Have you tried Painter?

So yeah, not much in the way of support.

Anyway, I hope it gets better developed, but for anyone out there considering the purchase I would suggest you steer clear for now.

    Hi Brett,

    start - properties -device manager
turn off the "standard HID devices - mainly wacom HID driver"

try this...we dont have cintiq but we have wacoms here and this helped us a lot.

I bought the standard 24HD model last year and absolutely love it but when the Touch functionality was announced I was gutted. I always find myself jabbing the screen with my fingers without thinking about it and thought the addition of Touch would be a genuine benefit, so to hear that it isn't well implemented is actually a massive relief (sorry!).

        Heya

Bah I'm running cintiq 21UX and I was quite interested in 24 touch. Good to know its bad, even tho I'd love to use it for web browsing and presentations heh. O well I will just get standard one once the time comes.

        Thanks, bye.

@martin: Thanks - I don't see that in the list, just a long list of "HID compliant device" and the wacom driver itself. Disabling that kills the Cintiq entirely.

@AJ: I was worried I would feel the same, which was why I opted to buy the touch. Should have taken your path

@Dada: It's not even great for web browsing actually. I use it occasionally but the calibration with your finger is not very stable to it becomes hard to select things accurately and I have to disable/re-enable touch to get it working again, there are many types of drop-down menus that simply won't work without the pen, you can't highlight text properly, two-touch right clicking is iffy at best, on and on. I use the pen 99.99% of the time.
