  • Launching my new studio: Heavy Artillery

    Hey all -

Just a post to let you know that I am officially re-launching my studio is the next few weeks. It has been renamed to Heavy Artillery, and will be operating on a very different basis as I move forward. The business will still be focused on CG and retouching work for advertising, but I am starting to do things in a different way.

The difference I am most excited about is the new format I am using to work with freelance talent. Aside from regular freelancers to help out on various types of jobs, I am also creating a small network of really top-notch artists (which I refer to as Lead Artists), each with their own particular specialty. The point of this it to move work towards them directly, but in a co-operative way, rather than trying to be a jack-of-all-trades type studio and do everything in-house. Lot's of bigger studios work along this line of course, but what I hope to make different is that everyone who works with Heavy Artillery works fully independently, with full awareness of the clients, and without contract, without NDA's, without non-compete clauses etc.

The plan is to create a collaborative and co-operative format so each can do the thing they are best at and produce great work together, without the usual red-tape and hassles and competitiveness that can make it so hard to put a team together for short term projects.

Part of what makes that work is that we are all agreed to work at common rates, with full transparency about the budget and requirements, and with the understanding that my goal is to ensure that everyone is fairly treated, fairly compensated, and fairly credited for the work they do.

I am super happy to have a few very well known artists that have agreed to begin working with me in this endeavour. They are names you will all know and recognize as being among the very best at what they do (in no particular order):

    • Thomas Suurland
    • Justin Goode
    • Anselm Von Seherr-Thoss (Psychosilence)

As well I have a few very talented artists in the roster for doing more regular type freelance work - which simply means doing support work on jobs, rather than the whole job on their own. Things like modeling, texturing, some lighting and material work etc, and either work for me or even for some of the lead artists as need be.

Please check out the new site at:

If you are interested in getting involved please have a good look at the information on the site in the "Working with Heavy Artillery" section. Bear in mind that I am definitely looking for some talented people to have in our on-call list for freelance work, but the bar is set very high and we are not looking for a lot of people at this point, so only the very best and most suitable will be considered.

    /b

      Nice idea!
I just can't seem to trust myself
So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?

This type of thing has worked really well for me on small, agile projects across time zones and IM based communication. Congrats on the new venture Brett, it's gonna go great for you.
