It needs to be quite a large area. Normally for tiled/timber floors I use a combination of bercontile and multitexture, but I can't think of a procedural way of doing this. Any suggestions?

I would probably do it manually. For example you can do two sets of uv's one where the tiles are randomized (so they get different wood grains on each tile) the other is layed out for the pattern. Once you figure out proper pattern for geometry or texture it should be quite easy to tile that.

I would model it and use multitexture.
Modelling tiles is usually faster than faffing around with getting procedurals looking right

Yep. Lots of instancing and a few different UV maps, a bunch of randomized MatIDs and you're done.

Yep - modelled it in no time and used a multitexture on it. Coolio.
