  • To "Win8" or not to "Win8" - that is the question

    Hi all

So for those that made the switch either via straight upgrade, new PC, or whichever other way, who is happy as a pig in errr uhhh mud, and who wish they'd rather stuck with Win7?

Any pitfalls or weirdness to look out for in Win8 or possible "hacks" to make Max, VRay and our other software behave as expected?
    Kind Regards,
    Morne

I am running Windows 8 without any issues. 3DS MAX 2013, the latest V-Ray, Photoshop CS6.. all running smoothly.

You didn't have issues with DR? I think I read somewhere that there was some issue with DR not seeing mapped drives or the administrator not having access to mapped drives or something like that...

Aside from Wacom frustrations, I've had no real problems with it. I have really found nothing about it that is an improvement over Windows 7 though. Kinda wish I had stayed with Windows 7, actually.

Oh, and one thing that really annoys me is that there is no way to do a file search from a specific date anymore. You just have Today, Yesterday, This week, Last Week, This month.... etc.

I am on W8 on 6 machines. the Wacom issues are major, major pains in the ass.

DR was a bit tricky to setup. I ended up running the nodes with the built-in Admin account and run the spawner with admin permission activated all the time too. It took a bit to get rolling but has been fine since.

Ooh! I just learned that you CAN search from a specific date, it's just not something you can click on anymore: http://www.computerhope.com/tips/tip202.htm

W8 is the worst thing I ever installed on my home work machine. Awful Awful Awful. It it wasn't such a pain, I'd reinstall with W7.

I am on windows7 and it is great (compared to Vista.) One of my architectural firm clients went to win8 and says he regrets it, but we did not really go beyond that in the discussion.

Windows 8 makes all the sense in the world when you see it on a touch screen, phone, or tablet.

I live by the old saying: "never change a running system" - if you dont have any major advantages using win8 instead of win7 then there is no reason to switch the system. since everything runs smooth under win7 i dont see any reason for me to upgrade wo win8.
