We did an animation using a Lightscape solution we exported into Max. It was for some apartment building - Sectorlight I think were the client. Lightscape was great - a git to work with though. Your geometry had to be so well optimised to keep it running even slightly smoothly. Deleting outside edges of window frames etc - what a pain that was!

Yeah a solution file would render so fast in max huh! - i did a few of those. I ran the 3d dept at Sectorlight too funnily enough; Im still in touch with Jerry there
It does seem that a workflow which incorporated a fully lit interactive mesh was the way forward, but then vray came along with much greater refinement, and most people forgot about that i guess.

                This pre-dates all that

This pre-dates all that, Cyber Studio on an Atari, via Imagine on an Amiga (procedural textures in the late 80's! amazing software), I am reliably informed Cyber Studio became 3DStudio !
Went thru Lightscape via Microstation with a dash of ArchiCAD, Photoshop before layers, one undo, don't know how I did it lad ! All on a 14" CRT (originally started on a 14" TV).
                Happy daze
