How do I use the z-depth channel, in Photoshop, to desaturate things in the distance. When I use the lens blur, it's easy; you select the channel as a mask.

Use an adjustment layer to desaturate where the mask is the z-depth channel.

select all, copy, navigate to the channels tab, click new at the bottom, paste, ctrl click on the new channel, back to layers & go to create new adjustment later at the bottom.

Well, that was easy. What was messing me up, was the ctrl+click part. The preview was showing a sharp selection, so I didn't think it was going to work. Thanks!

Depending of what your goal is, you can also instead of desaturate, stick a white colour over the selection and play with opacity. That will give distant haze...
