  • Color Picker

    This has to be my biggest problem working on MAX. I get RGB values, and they rarely look the same in 3DS MAX. Here, is a screen shot, showing my issue. The color picker is the color I want, but when I type the RGB values into the MAX color picker, the color is never the same.

    The closest I can get it, is using the V-Ray color, and do an inverse gamma (.4545).

    And, on a side note, the reverse gamma only seems to affect the VRayColor swatch. My material still renders out like the 3DS MAX Swatch does, which is really bright.

      You are working in linear color space, therefore any color that is "corrected" will not work properly. We typically create color swatches in photoshop with most of the colors we need, then open the image in Max and color pick to get the linear color values. It's an extra step, but works out pretty well.

          Okay. at least I know it's not me. I too, create a color in PS, and use it as a bitmap in MAX. But, it just seems like a workaround to something that is broken.

            Or at the very least we can add an option to the VRayColor texture to correct the color...

              That sounds great, I had thought VRayColor already did that with those gamma correct options. Although I never use it.

                  bobby,
                  you have to apply inverse gamma straight to rgb values; a workaround could be what you have done so far with vray color map plus copy and paste the corrected swatch into diffuse swatch, then disable the vraycolor map (use the map only as a sort of rgb values converter)

                    Yes this is what I do also. Use VRayColor to "correct" the colour. Then just copy and paste the swatch into diffuse and remove the VRayColor
