      were maya obviously the fittest, id agree... but if we are honest probably xsi was/is the fittest of adsk's 3d packages from a core / technology point of view, and max is from number of seats worldwide..

        xsi is, or so every xsi artist says. Problem is, softimage dropped the ball years ago and dropped out of the market. To which now is very very hard to get back to. In terms of execution, I would say that max is actually better in a lot of areas then maya, for example modifiers. Maya just doesn't have them. Number of plugins for max is just ridicules compared to maya. But for me maya is a choice because it has powerful referencing tool, poweful render layers and a few other things, something max never had and most likely never will. I will gladly sacrifice some of maxes advantages to those in maya This is pure IMO though.
