Anyone have any recommendations for a good one? Haven't used them onset before and we are considering them for scanning actors to create digital doubles.
For cheap you can get a Kinect like sensor like the Primesense or Asus something or other. And use software like ReconstructMe or Skanect. You could be up and running for well under $300-$500 US.
I've been scanning with my Kinect for a few years and picked up the primesense a few months ago and like it much better than the kinect. That said I'm sure you can pick up a used Kinect for cheap and it would work just fine.
Of course at that price you can't expect miracles. These setups don't capture high accuracy detail. I think the tolerance is something like 1-3mm resolution though I've found that varies depending on all kinds of factors. Still I've had lots of fun scanning firends and family. Skanect does texture capture while ReconstructMe is suposed to get that in the future. ReconstructMe seems a little more flexible if you're into tweaking things and they provide an SDK. Skanect works well but is clearly trying to simplify things as much as possible for the average user which feels a little odd at times. I've been using Skanect more than ReconstructMe the past few months.
It seems like the good hand held scanners start in the 10-12k range but seem like they are much more robust though I've never used one since I'm just playing around with 3d scanning
thanks, those solutions look to be too low res to be of use to us. We need something a little more robust and are looking to spend under 10k. We might end up going with an Artec Eva.... hoping not to spend THAT much though.
