  • Maya set editing

Sets are very powerful in Maya, but are not very user friendly. They must be created, then attached properly. AE do not have UI for them. After all this, every editing must be done separately in the relationship editor, where you must find your set, then choose proper filter and finally set the object. This is a lot of work. It's possible to make a lot of this stuff done automatically. It's not very clear however what will work well. Some experiments are already done in Phoenix FD, since it has less users. But this is a general problem, more opinions on the subject will be very helpful.

    1) What do you think about automatic set creation/naming/connection to the node (for example VRayDirt/VRayDistance/VRayToon/etc)? This is not preventing you from using custom sets, since the sets can contain other sets which is supported.

    2) What do you think about adding set editing functionality inside the AE itself? Something like this:

Name:	screenshot.png
Views:	1
Size:	33.4 KB
ID:	878436

This show/hide buttion can actually toggle between edit mode and showing only the selected nodes. Another variant is to show this editor in a separate window, not in the AE (but again with the proper filters and no need to manually select the set), and only the selected object in the AE. Of course this is not preventing the standard set editing from the relationship editor. It's purpose is to be a quicker alternative.

Im quite new Maya user (former MAX user), and not sure is this exactly related into this Ivaylos topic, but our opinion is not to use sets in for example Phoenix sources. Instead, to use 3D paint for creating discharge maps for emitting. 3D paint is very easy and efficient way to control exact emitting spots in objects.

Set editing is to choose the objects, texturing can't replace that, it's an addition which should already work. You just need to use an image type that vray supports.

If you mean some sort of special 3d paint tool that works more "out of the box", we can investigate this for 3.0. But the standard 3d paint do also great job. Also vertex color sets are supported.
