I'm asking because none of the solutions I found here or elsewhere worked for me and the problems carried on to Max 2014. Zooming in one step with the mouse wheel would take about a second, same with the viewport reacting to panning, so you can imagine how much lost time that amounts to in a work year. Today I decided to revisit some old trees I made with GrowFX and wasn't satisfied with and to my surprise that particular file had none of these slowdowns and I could actually enjoy working with the file. It might be my imagination but it felt like saving, merging and dealing with the material editor might have been slightly faster too.
So I emptied the scene and saved it as a blank .max , re-opened it and merged a polygon heavy scene I'm working on and the viewport still remains functional and smooth. Maybe I'm the only one still struggling with this but since I now have a blank MAX scene that works, I thought I'd offer to share it in case someone else is still on board the lag train. Of course it's not guaranteed to do wonders on anyone elses Max but hey, doesn't hurt to try
