Not to spoil your excitement, I personally witnessed dual 32 core machine in action at Sigraph 2011. Nothing special in terms of setup, just regular box, but 64 threads (non HT) if I remember correctly. I don't know why intel makes this "special" 12 core cpu for $2,600 and things everyone should be happy, its such a cash grab.

Well 24 core/42 threads... trust me when you have client next to you, it helps a lot to be as fast as possible in RT...

Then again those 2.7 ghz.... just... cry hard.

I assume they run as hot as hell as all new intels right? So I'll pass and wait for next gen.

Id expect 65C on full load. Remember they dont OC so they actually run very cold...

            Wooooo

I would love to see what kind of cpu it was and what the price would be for that setup.

But I mean, that processing power could be easely achieved with 5 nodes of 3930k 6 threads (Not HT).
Those 5 nodes would probably cost $6k, but I would never think that the setup you saw cost $6k...

Better to have more "low end" cpu

I like to see those cpu going out for the technical point of view, and even if I wish I could pay for them, I think I would never go for them, it just doesn't make sens, specially when you see vray handling DR so well...

The difference is, though xeons are more expensive, and yes you can match their output with i7 quite well, becomes in licenses per node as well as space/power. Imagine you have limited space, limited power, then 5 blades with two boards in each seating 2 12 core xeons will be way more efficient then bunch of i7. But I do agree that i7 is faster then xeon, in fact in my tests i non overclocked i7 3930 performed 15% slower then dual 6 core (12 total) 3.4 ghz xeon

Well I did a rig all components u need except graphic card
                24 core/64gb ram/512ssd/case/coling/etc cost me 5600£ including vat(900£vat) = 72ghz
My expectactions are that a 8 core I7(not released yet ) rig will cost in range 1250-1500 = 32000 at 4ghz OC
So you can get around 3-4 i7 which will produce total power of 96000 - 128000 ghz of power. Its a lot more but it also takes a lot more power/space/noise and so on. Also its 3-4 render nodes vs 1

Im still undecided which PC to buy hah

Are you saying that a 6 core i7 (12 threads) is only 15% slower than two 6 core (12thread) xeon processors?

Here we have a dual xeon 8 core (3.1ghz) machine and it is something like 4 times as fast as the i7 2600 4 core machines, which is something that is expected (scales almost linearly).
A dual 12 core machine (24 thread, 48 for the whole machine) will be super fast for rendering

I'm also plenty satisfied with my i7 3930K's, slightly overclocked.... but I cannot compare as I have only them. I was always questioning if I should get some Xeons but the price difference is just huge.
would be willing to make some tests to compare with other rigs.

                    regards,

2x OC i7 8 core will be way faster and almost 50% price of the 24 core xeon.

Thanks. You are speaking about Haswell-E 8 core, I suppose. It seems to come out late 2014 and I couldn't find any price info for that.

I doubt, probably he is talking about i7 2600k, 3770k, 4770k or something similarly cheap

No I'm talking about the upcoming 8 core cpus : p 6 core i7 is around 450£ so an 8 core I expect to be around 650-750£ since all the componentes for 6core are the same as 8 core then the price will be 1250-1500 more or less...

Yes I actually have recently done tests. I have two systems in the office which I've done my test on: dual xeon x5690 3.4 ghz, so two 6 core cpus vs i73930k, non overclocked 3.4 ghz, and yes, the single i7 was 15% (ish) slower then the dual xeon If I check their stats on the render farm on the same job, the render times are virtually identical. That is, with xeon having HT enabled, but for this test only, generally I have HT disabled on the xeons because of another ongoing issue we are having with vray.
