  • Incredibly long loading times when opening max files

    Hello all,
i am writing this post to find out whether someone is suffering with the same issue.

We have 3 MAX workstations at work. The main, with all sorts of plugins for MAX + vray and the other two with vray only.
Both machines with vray only do not suffer from this issue, only mine, the main one :-/

The only thing that helps is to have two versions of ENU folder.
One with clean instal without certain plugs
Second, with all the plugins and macroscripts installed.

I am not talking about some small times...i am talkign about opening the 200MB max file for 40 minutes!!!
When i switch to clean ENU, it opens under 3 minutes!!!!

So it must be the plugins for sure.

Ive got ForestPack, Multiscatter, SolidRocks, HDRI Light Studio, Rail Clone ....those are the one the other two machines dont have (or they only have the render node version of them)

Its really frustrating this issue...usually happens with files with a lot of maps and materials.

    Anyone else having such problems?

I am on MAX2014...it also did this on 2013 and 2012....and 90% of the cases on my machine :-////

Please help me find the solution.....the only one i ve been give from Autodesk is to erase ENU folder and start up with clean one...which i do but its really stupid.

Strange this is that when my machine is part of DR rendering, the buckets load in normal times on the server machine.

    Thanks for any input!

    Best Regards

Normally when I have a max file take a long time to open when the file isn't too complex I find it is down to some asset being linked to a network drive that is no longer available. Probably not much help...

          Hi Luke
i ve use these two already and while on live chat with one of the Autodesks support guys. None of these has helped.
Its just a strange issue that only we seem to have but i have no idea what to track.
          Thanks!

I assume you tried merging everything to fresh new scene?

              yup...all that
merging, getting rid of material links, opening in deifferent max versions.
              The problems appera in time.
FIrst i got clean ENU with clean install.
Then i install all the plugins.
Things are quite normal for a while.
Soon, some files become like this on my machine, whle on the other machines which dont have my plugs all is still fine.
So it really comes down to plugins in my opinion.

Have you tried switching to a different viewport engine like DirectX?

                Best regards,

Are the 'problem' files loaded with plug-in information or just regular max files that just turn into slow monsters?

I know that we have had this issue in the past with a certain project. Turning off 'compress on save' helped to get the load times back in check. It was weird, but there was definitely something taking a LONG time to load. It only happened on that one project though.

Is there a small file that is causing issues, that maybe someone outside or your network could take a look at? I've had random links to files break and create problems that I couldn't track down until I took the file home and off the network away from all the mapped drives.
