  • LCD monitors, how many use them?

It's almost time to replace my 21" trinitron and I am considering an LCD to replace it.

Do any of you guys use them for 3d work? And how does vray look on them?

Ive used both and for me most CRTs are good enough for use, but with LCDs, I dont like the look of em unless they are pretty high end. Others might have other experiences though.

my experience is similar to percy's.
a few months ago i looked at buying an LCD but after reading some reviews it turns out that LCDs don't quite have as good of a color blending as CRTs still have....and that's important especially for us that work w/ graphics/phots all day, in max and Pshop..etc.
better color blending gives more accurate color rendition.......however it sounds like LCDs are catching up fairly quickly.....so maybe some of the high-end more expensive LCDs have better color blending then the regular ones......

I've just put my hand on a brand new Photon20vision (lacie)...
and I still not believe my eyes...
And I do not regret my old 22" Iiyama pro510.

What is the quality like? How much better than your standard LCD is it?

I ordered the samsung 191T+ today and am looking forward to getting it.

Thanks for all the input. I think the monitor will be fine. I looked at one today and it looked fantastic to me.

well, the LCD's specification are not quite good.
it has very little brightness (200cd/m2) and also the contrast ratio is average, 350:1
a good contrast starts from 450-500:1..
                The 20" is good though.

                  I used to have 2 Iiyama 510 22''. No I have to BenQ 20'' FP2081.
I have to say it's now better, much better.
The resolution is 1600 width smooth, clear and no flickering. It's not to dark but a brighter display whould be fine. The FP2081 is at 899€ the cheapest at the moment in his class. It's good quality too.

I have a very new 19'' Benq too with 600 celvin. Very bright, almost like looking in lamp. But I prefer the 20'' the really much better.

                  regards,

                  robert

Absolutely wrong, take a look at this http://www.tomshardware.com/display/20040226/index.html

                    Tomshardware say:
""As before, we calibrated and measured the monitors with a LaCie colorimeter. We changed the settings slightly to make them more like those used for computer graphics, i.e. 5000 Kelvin for the color temperature, 2.2 gamma and brightness that was as close as possible to 110 cd/m². This last point may be surprising when you realize that some monitors claim to go up to 700 cd/m², and all claim 220 cd/m² as a minimum. You're right, they're all too bright. Unless the monitor is designed for public display, a lower brightness level is needed to produce a display that is easier on the eye and less garish. As a reminder, the ideal brightness level for conventional (CRT) monitors is around 85 cd/m².""

                    And I say:
the photon20vision by lacie is one of the best LCD, just try it and you will
understand, and forget all about contrast ratio and cd/m²...it's purely marketing. It's not a gaming LCD, it's a LCD for profesionnal CG.

i think tomshardware is the worst (of the more known) hardware website on the net.

                      i have a samsung 191T+ too and i think it´s a nice monitor.

had a few 21" CRT´s before but the geometry was always a bit crappy.
try to scroll a zoomed wireframe from top to bottom on a 21" or 22" CRT you will always see some changes in the geometry because a CRT is not 100% linear over the whole screen.

yes tom's hardware is the worst and the most well payed..

but this doesnt mean, what they say is not right.

Yes If I have a chance I will take a look on it. We'll see

Well, compared to pcworld.com its great
So, as we are off-topic, why shouldn't we put some nice hardware websites that we use to visit?

                          I can suggest some,

I'm currently Running 2X Samsung 191T and a Samsung 172T and Im more than happy with the quality of them. Just remember that for the most part with these monitors that you get what you pay for.

                              CRT's becoming extinct

I'm using a Samsung 213T at home. It's a 21.3 inch 1600x1200 display and it's awesome. I first purchased a 19" version, who's resolution was 1280x1024. If you decide to get one 19" or greater the lower pixel resolution will be very evident. I strongly recommend something at least 1600x1200 to avoid stair-stepping, especially when using DVI.

On another note, Sony is stopping production of many of their CRT's, and replacing them with LCD panels. We found this out by trying to order 8 of their Hi-Def CRT's. This IS the future with most vendors as well.
