i was surprised the news was met with general approval when this was announced. firstly since its *spectacularly* bad value for money compared to buying unless you only need it short term($2000 a year just to rent max!?)

and secondly and more importantly, how long before this becomes the only way to get the software? you know.. cos its in the cloud.. which is new and wonderful.

I guess, if you have a short term project with immediate needs, monthly is a good idea. I guess, like anything that is made for convenience, it costs more.

Well, considering that some of these "suites" can cost anywhere between $6k-$12k, $2k per year can be more affordable. Considering you will get almost 3 years out / and stay current on the rental model vs the intial cost of the static license plus the subscription fee of $1k or more. It can be much more affordable and spread the costs out over a longer period of time. Thus greatly reducing software entry costs.

Just a different point of view. Many times the numbers appear bigger than they really are when compared to a traditional licensing scheme.

When running software costs for a 3-4 year term, these "rental" plans can work in your favor. Adding a couple of employees no longer requires me to commit to a static license, and then potentially get stuck with an extra license if that person/people don't work out.

Obviously if you already have a license and are on a subscription, these new licensing options are not going to save you any money. More for any additional licenses that may be needed.

i see that side of the argument. for occasional expansion its economically sensible. . i just dread the time when adsk follow adobe.. already (i dont remember details) head of autodesk was banging on about cloud based software being the future of adsk or somesuch.

Exactly! Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the static license model. I don't know if I would like to see everything go rental license based. You would almost have to start charging clients software AND labor costs at that point to help offset the increased cost just to do business.
