  • Funny email from Autodesk

Got this email from Autodesk last night. Max crashes for one reason or another a few times every week. Since installing Max2014, I thought I'd start reporting crashes to see if anything happened. I haven't done this for a few weeks as I never seem to get any kind of response. However, last night, out of the blue, I got this:

    "Hi Richard

My name is xxxxxxxx – I am a development manager at Autodesk for the 3ds Max product. I noticed recently you crashed using 3ds max 2014. Would it be possible to get some more information from you about what you were doing, or even a file you were using at the time that reproduces the crash.

Anything you send will be very useful in tracking down this particular problem.

    Kind Regards"

Anyone else keep notes of exactly what happens and when for each and every crash???? What a joke.
    Kind Regards,
    Richard Birket

Well, they are trying to track down a particular viewport crash related to VRayIES... I've no idea why it happens, so we asked for more information. Maybe it's related...

    Best regards,
    Vlado

I usually have the same 4-8 things cause me the most problems / crashing. So it's pretty easy to remember which files I was working on when getting the crash.

I've also gotten into the habit of creating a Text file containing the steps of the most common crashes I have, allowing me to quickly copy/paste that information into the crash dialogue. It greatly helps them track it down and when they reply I have a base knowledge of the problem and files.

        That's terribly organised of you!

I'm a beta tester for many different pieces of software, so it just became a habit when testing.

One company pretty much has me on speed dial. Apparently I use parts of the software that doesn't get too much beta testing and it's a big part of my workflow. So I really try to be diligent in what's going on. Hopefully it will make the software better for everyone else.

                  ROFL!

One of my correspondences went something like this:

Them: "How were you able to crash at this point?"
Me: "I just did X figuring it would work like this..."
Them: "Um, that's not what that tool does."
                  Me: *facepalm* DOH!

Forgot to add, my max sometimes crashes when its sitting idle with empty scene. Oh wait, my maya does that too!
