Challenge for you...well, for me really, but wondered what ideas you might have

I have an animation with a closeup of a record spinning on a turntable. The camera is locked off, but I need to simulate the look of the vinyl record going round and round.

I have the geometry, but am wondering what approach to take with the texturing. At the moment, I have a 'tile' map in the bump slot (at 100%) of a black, reflective material. I have set anisotropy to about 0.5. Its looking *ok* but wondering how I can achieve the look of the record spinning. I guess a tiny bit of distortion on the geometry of the record, as though it has been warped a bit?

    - related to this question, how can I 'lock' the UVW mapping of an object so that even if my object (record) spins, the mapping remains fixed?

For locking you UVW try this
    http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/gizmocontrol
Lets you link gizmos to other objects/dummies
I have used it with great success on slice modifier.

As for the record I would warp it a bit as you say, and add a small amount of noise to the map to break the lines a bit
See this macro shot of a record

Just apply noisy displacement to slightly bemd record as it is. Then key rotation of texture in texture settings for both displacement and tiles and wuaila.

Or model record bended and just rotate model ?

It would be interesting to see how you tackled the task. I have yet to animate mine, but from a still image it looks OK. I just need to get the needle of the stylus to track the slight up/down wobble you get as the record spins. That's my next puzzle.

cool project maybe you can extract a spline, path constrain a dummy and use a lookat controller?

Good plan. When I get back to the record player, I'll give it a try. Attempting to do the interior design on an entire apartment at the moment. Wish I got interior designer fees on top of CGI fees

Yes this is highly annoying when the client hasn't got their ducks in a row and your scope of work suddenly involves design also. Clear contracts up front could help here, although archviz usually moves so quick. Sometimes a project lasts 2 or 3 days, but it takes 2 weeks to get the contract signed!
