  • Wheel mouse zoom problems in viewport

I have a Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical 1.1A. Lately (and I don't know why) the middle wheel to zoom function has got very slow with a big delay between rolling the wheel and the viewport actually zooming in/out. Where should I be looking to imrove this? I have installed Intellimouse from Microsoft, but it doesn't really seem to have helped.

I'm using Nitrous as the display driver - I will change to Direct 3D and see if that helps.

    Any pointers (pardon the pun!)?
    Kind Regards,
    Richard Birket

OK, I've tried everything I can think of.

Downgraded my Nvidia drivers to a previous release. No luck.
    Uninstalled Intellimouse software. No luck.
Tried a different Microsoft ball mouse. No luck.
Bought a new HP mouse. No luck.

Rolling the middle mouse wheel is pretty much unusable at the moment because of the delay (even in a fresh scene with no geometry!). I am using CTRL+ALT+MMB to zoom now. This is slightly smoother, but I now have a 1 second delay when I finish the zoom or pan movement using the MMB.

    Where else should I look?

Incidentally, zooming and panning in Autocad is just fine.
    Kind Regards,

Do you have a 3Dconnexion device like a space pilot?

Nope. I've just bought a HP x4500 mouse to see if that was better than a Microsoft mouse, but it doesn't seem to have made a blind bit of difference.

it's most likely related to scene scale then. It won't be related to the mouse at all. One mouse wheel click is one mouse wheel click no matter which driver you use. Max has to interpret that. But if your objects are tiny, your mouse wheel click will move in seemingly Giant steps. I'm having the same problem on one scene right now, but it's because of my scene scale. I'm working in inches, but working on things that are only a few millimeters at times, but in a scene with a large room. If memory serves me right, the scene's bounding box effects the scale of the mouse? I'm sure someone will correct me there.

In my case I'm stuck. But you might not be. If you've got some things that are way off in the distance that you can remove, that will probably help. Or you could rescale the whole scene....but guess what that does to your lighting. :/

It's probably best just to avoid using the wheel for zoom. It gives you a bunch more control anyway.

Its not to do with scale. It happens even with a scene with no geometry. There is a lag of a second each time I click the centre wheel button to pan or zoom and when I release the button.

Just throwing it out there - there's a possibility that 3rd party spyware or an additional service/virus could be tracking keystrokes or using up system resources.
I only say this because you've tried multiple mice and 3D applications can be process/RAM intensive.
Might want to check out the free SuperAntiSpyware and Spybot 2.
Then run CCleaner and also check out Slimdrivers.

Last but not least, poke through your Device Manager under input devices (I believe) and see if there are any extra drivers installed.

Hopefully that takes care of it. Either way, that kind of maintenance needs to be done from time-to-time anyways.

For anyone who is interested, I think I have solved my problems. I tried many, many things, but it seems to have been related to a AVG Free 2014. I have uninstalled this and my mouse now functions as normal. I am now using Spybot+ for my AV protection.
