3dsmax 2014 viewport canvas

I'm trying to use viewport canvas but every time I try and start painting the model turns to wireframe (yellow wires) and I cannot see the texture. I've used this in 2013 without this problem so I'm assuming this is a bug unless I'm just doing something wrong....

don't do it often, but I happened to do a bit of painting the other day and everything seemed to work fine. 3ds max design 2014 here.

I tried rolling back the viewport to dx9 but it did the same thing. I'm now completely stuck and cannot paint objects in max
