  • Outlook replacement - Free Thunderbird?

    Hi all

I'm in need of replacing my ancient Outlook 2003 which isn't 100% compatible with Win8.1 (various small annoying issues)
Anyway, after Mozilla "dropped" Thunderbird after release 3.0, seems they changed their mind and it is live and well and already on version 24.

    BUT
After the initial drop in version 3.0, Kaspersky ALSO decided to drop support for their products on Thunderbird. I can't find any recent documentation whether or not they are now again supporting it seeing it is live again.

    Any thoughts or suggestions?

I prefer an offline mail client. I also looked at MailBird, but don't want to pay for a pro version.
    Kind Regards,
    Morne

Thunderbird is excellent. Been using it for many years and no issues. Not sure if the Kapersky thing is an issue. There are other Antivirus/Anti-Malware packages out there, perhaps better ones, that will work with it.

TBird does have its little annoyances but there are so many great addons for it. I use one that allows me to extract and save all attachments from folders' emails and save them to a local folder on my server, to help save IMAP disk space. And there are some very nice themes too.

Thunderbird is awful! I particularly hate the search feature. Returns anything but the things you are looking for...

I've also been using Thunderbird for a long time now. Generally works fine. The search could probably be better, I agree.

Yeh the default search type of Relevance instead of Date is a little annoying but overall it works ok. The one issue I sometimes have is when you click on an email you found in your search and it doesn't actually display for some reason. If you then manually navigate to it in the main app, though, it displays fine.

FWIW the new outlook is actually ok, not amazing - has some very annoying bugs. But otherwise its decent, if you wanted to stick with outlook.

I'm still on the fence between Outlook and Thunderbird. I don't want to spend the money, but it seems I may be leaning towards Outlook again. It's mainly because we've rolled out Kaspersky and won't be switching to a different or ANOTHER security package.

I'm using Windows Live Mail on Win8.1. It has some small annoying things too, but it's very handy and light. So I'm using it. Furthermore, it's a free.
