Major pauses using aftereffects when using EXR files

I've rendered out a pass to 32bit exr files. The are pretty small res (720x405) and use Zip compression. As soon as I import into aftereffects the program starts to pause all over the place. Even when I've got live preview off and try to scrub the timeline it still pauses for ages and then the whole screen flickers and everntually allows me to use the scrubber. Click off onto the viewport and then back to the scrubber and it pauses again...what the hell !!!

The EXR files are also very small..65 k max and it is a very simple pass with alpha.

Any help really appreciated.

I deleted my prefs and it seems okay now. I think it may have something to do with using more than one monitor but I'm not entirely sure. Oh well
