  • Any1 know of a simple free madcar alternative

    Hi all

Does anybody know of a simple and free madcar alternative or a craft director alternative?

I have a situation on uneven terrain where I'll be FAR enough so I don't have to worry about suspension, but CLOSE enough that a simple follow a spline won't work.
    Kind Regards,
    Morne

This has some really smart ideas in it - https://vimeo.com/19391479

The old version of the script used to use a clever trick of making a plane where each corner was at the centre pivot of each tire and then using the conform space warp to make the plane slide over the surface of whatever uneven ground you had. You then used a few nulls for look ats and rotation constraints to make the axles of the wheels tilt appropriately and then make a final null that sat in the centre averaging the lot out to make the body of the car sit at the correct angle.

You know 4 wheeled cars are free with craft director?

No I didn't. Its been a few years since I looked at the Craft stuff. I remember a few max versions back (version 2009 I think) it came with some demo stuff.

Thanks for the heads up, will take a look

            Hey Morne

Not sure what you need out of the rig, but have you tried these

You could also look at Ant Traffic Sim:

                http://75ive.com/ant-traffic-simulator/

It isn't FREE but it isn't expensive either and is pretty feature rich and is a script therefore doesn't need recompiling for new versions etc.

This one seems it could work best for my needs, if only I can get the thing to WORK! The instructions suck big time. Right at the end, you're suppose to link "something" to a conform spacewarp, But it doesnt mention when you're suppose to create the spacewarp, or what I'm suppose to conform to what?!? Tried a few times to get this right without any luck. Best I got was the car following my spline, but not on the terrain, not even on the spline. The car moves to 1000 miles below the terrain and it follows the path asif its driving on a flat terrain

Nice scripting, but wheels turning randomly no matter what speed the car goes and also not following terrain is a no thanks. Maybe in other situations I could use this one

That is a bit TOO simple for my current needs

Ok this one is by far the MOST FUN out of the lot hehe. Can get a bit lost in there having so much fun. Pity you can only follow a spline on the paid version. I have a pretty big site with uneven terrain. Even with lowpoly versions of everything the viewport drags a bit. Also, with the free version its difficult the get things smooth and not drive over curbs and stay in the lane

This actually looks pretty cool and I may end up getting this for myself for the NEXT project

For now though, in a nutshell, I'm back to where I started. Or I can just struggle along with the craft 4 wheeler free

Make a new scene with only the terrain and the low poly car - don't even link them yet, and use an xbox controller to drive. There should be any slowdown at all.
You need analog steering/acceleration from a controller to be able to drive it properly, doing it with an on/off for gas and steering makes it lurch all over the place. xbox controllers are plug and play with official support too, they're the easiest to get going.
Also, use the time scale feature to drive in slow motion.
