  • 3DS Max Populate

    Hello,

I have been messing with Populate in Max for some projects, our designers would like to know if I can make the silhouette, just making the transparent.

So far adding a refractive shader on the has not been successful because if the geometry.

Is there another way of ding this?

    I would appreciate anyone's advise.

    Thanks!

i would have thought that adding a refractive shader would have made them look like something out of the movie, "Predator." (Which could be interesting in an Architectural animation)

Render them out as a pass with self illumination on and no lights and use it as a mask to overlay them onto the render? Use some matte elements too if you want to catch their shadows.

        See this thread http://forums.chaosgroup.com/showthr...t=flat+opacity

        Not doable at the moment.

I just rendered a separate pass, people with lightmtl applied, and then composited over the animation. Was pretty straightforward in the end, and also bit more flexible.

Just add a vraymaterial on the people.
          Diffuse: black
          Reflect: Black
Refract: grey by whatever amount they should be seethrough
          EDIT: Refract IOR = 1.0
Self-Illum give it a colour maybe white or whatever you want. Increase multiplier (20 works great in most cases with vraycam)

Right click on people and go into VRAY Properties (not object properties)
          Untick visible to GI
          Untick visible in refractions

          DONE
          Enjoy

For added fun you can add a vraytoon and only INCLUDE only the people
Give line colour whatever you want
          Tick Hide inner edges
          Tick Compensate camera exposure
          DONE

The DRAWBack is that you can't see the people THROUGH windows

          Here's a version where I stuck a gradient in the self-illum slot:

I tried that method also, but then as you say you cant see people through glass. Additionally you cant see people through other people.

Can you explain how you set up you separate pass with people with lightmtl applied? Where you able to get the shadows in the comp?

The toon look may be cool for ArchViz...I tried reproducing your steps with the populate people and I get the weird refractive predator look on them.

I'm not sure what I have missed.

you didnt miss anything, that's his result. use a vray color map in the opacity slot and leave the refraction black to remove the predator look. if you use a little diffuse they'll pick up some shading too, might look nice.

Err no, in my example I've set the refraction to a medium grey to make them slightly transparent
I'm busy making a tutorial to explain it a bit better

No for refraction I set it to IOR of 1.0
sorry forgot to mention that in previous post. But it all will be nicely detailed in my free tutorial

Thanks!...that was it...now is there a way to render out the silhouette's as a separate pass with the shadows and reflections and comp them in AE?
