Does anyone tried this kind of effect in max. I can't make bomb to rip apart the cloth somehow.

Pretty sure this can be done in the new Pflow ("new" I think 2014)

    Using glue operators etc.

http://vimeo.com/51129198 has a link to a tutorial by anselm von seherr-thoss (I get bonus points if I typed that right from memory) but it's blocked in my company for malware reasons.

an easy way, but I do not know how effective it is... and if it can go in the direction of your research
In fact, I tend to forget how the flex modifier is a good tool !

Thanks guys! I will try flex, but somehow I also started to make it work with cloth mod. The worst part is preparing geometry with cutting it for the proper shape pieces. Too bad rayfire doesn't work with such fabric things.

Hmm, rayfire can use a bitmap as a cutting pattern, you might find something that has slightly more organic, torn looking edges using something like this made greyscale - http://cgtextures.com/texview.php?id...p131s6000pg507

Thanks John, but what's problematic is the force that will create this tulip like bend edge.

I just spent some time trying -and failing- to do this using cloth pressure settings. But it might be possible to achieve if you tear the cloth using an invisible animated object that bursts out and opens up real fast.

I remember trying something like this with cloth to use as a base for a realflow sim (this was the result: https://vimeo.com/70465941 ).
As far as I know I used a combination of cloth pressure + pre defined tears per vertex selection (animated strength) aaand maybe an animated object inside the sphere (not quite sure at the moment) and it was a just painful to control. Especially with pressure the cloth just goes wild and flies in the opposite direction of the tear.

I think there is an option to still use an animated object to just cut the cloth without acting as a collision object which might do what you're after.

At the end I used cloth mod plus wind, and few pbombs. I cut geo with quick slice (split- on) and that is it.
