I had the original Surface Pro...the intergraded graphics were horrible with the Max viewport.

Good to know. I have a Surface 2 (RT), but I gave it to my son. Currently, I use my 14" Chromebook to remote (Chrome Remote Desktop) into my office PC. It works well, but it's very hard to see small details. I just ordered an iPad (4th Gen); the colors are awesome and it helps when I am proofing a render. I sold my last iPad, and I miss the image quality. I am just feeling out all my options before I purchase a new main PC.

I'm surprised it could run Max at all

Fat is better in my experience, I have an Alienware 17 inches and 20lb ...heavy but it does everything.
I have a friend with a MacPro, same price and of course it looks cool and beautiful but it couldn't handle 3d modeling well... Because it's very thin the overheat was insane.

I have a Asus 17.3" G750JX-DB71 and it's awful. Crashes all the time, the keyboard is back lit, but only works when it wants too. In Photoshop, I'll be working along and all of a sudden, the screen goes black. So, in my case, fat isn't better.

I have tried everything. It'll work fine for a few days/weeks and then crap out.

I have the i3 Surface Pro 3. It handles light modeling in sketchup just fine, I imagine it would also work well with MoI3d since I have had it running okay on netbooks before. I have read that the i3 can handle light photoshop use as well but I have not tested that myself yet.

I have a Surface Pro 1 as well and I have used many of the Autodesk and Adobe products on it. It certainly wouldn't work as my primary workstation, but in a pinch for light work it performs pretty well IMO, I have used it for some fairly heavy work through Team Viewer so there is also that option if you have a good network/internet connection to work through.

3D, designers, illustrators, etc are not the target for those tables for sure...nothing is light use in our field, a lot 3d content so I wouldn't try to resolve y live any time soon with those gadgets....it would be nice to stop carrying around when I'm traveling a 20lb laptop but at least I know that if i don't have good internet overseas i'm still can get stuff done with my heavy hammer.

In an all or nothing situation, and at the level of this type of work that is typical here at the VRay forum, I agree, but I don't think Bobby is looking to make the Surface Pro his only means of doing work.

I feel it needs to be said that Microsoft is targeting the Cintiq crowd and requesting feedback for future versions from designers and illustrators. It is easy enough to see that it is still a work in progress from their impressions, but Microsoft is getting close in that regard:

Some artists are finding that the Surface Pro 2 fits nicely into their toolbag as it is:

The Surface Pro is also being used by the team at Microsoft to do all of the design and engineering work for the Surface line of devices:
                            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKe33DBSluU

Honestly anything in computing requires some sort of compromise, where and how much compromise should be made is up to each individual's needs. For me, considering the tablet choices that are available today, for any tablet to even peek into consideration at this level has merit and is certainly something to keep an eye on. If I need to get heavy work done, that is what I have a proper desktop workstation for...for now.

I do think Microsoft was a little hasty in releasing the Surface Pro 3 since the Broadwell M and ULT architectures from Intel are right around the corner. I feel that the thermal design in the Surface Pro 3 is not sufficient for the current Haswell i5 or i7 chips. This would be why I opted for the i3 variant personally. The Surface Pro 2 has the same i5 and i7 processors but better thermal design so it would make a better choice if you need to be doing any moderate work in Max or Revit without RDT, I would avoid heavy work such as rendering since it will push and sustain high thermal levels, likely decreasing the longevity of the device.
