Script to separate all objects (multi-sub etc) in scene by material

I have a sketchup model that has been supplied to me. When I import into Max2014, there are a gazillion multi-sub object materials. How can I 'explode' the scene into individual materials, so that there are no more multi-sub object materials?

No worries!

A word of warning; it can do some unexpected things so start off small and save, save, save. And check materials after each use.

When you export the model under options pick by material then in max make a material library using the same names that the Sketchup model has and update the materials using library.
