  • Bevelled Mirror

Embarrassingly, I cannot find a good way to model this bevelled mirror in Max. We normally model in Cad and file link in, but the subtle curve on this mirror has stumped me.

I attach a file with the yellow mirror being the one I am trying to 'trace', the purple one being my starting point for my Max version. I would have thought a simple taper modifier with a slight curve, but it doesn't create an equal bevel on each side.

    Tips welcome.

this scene is strange. locked up white for good 4 times and quit straight to desktop twice. you should probably look into cleaning it and merging your main one into a new scene.

Anyway here it is - http://we.tl/uUlGJnwnNZ
I left the modifier stack and the object I made to figure out the angles. Just a sweep with meshsmooth and 10 minutes of connecting, moving verts & a chamfer. Could have been cleaner but w/e, should render fine. remove the meshsmooth, collapse the stack then add the meshsmooth back before merging it into your scene, your scene units are different to mine and sometimes sweeps break in translation.

Thanks Neil - crashing was certainly part of the problem. I did try with a sweep but no beef. I will look at your stack and see where I was going wrong. Much appreciated.

Mmm. When I render, I seem to get bending of the reflections between the front flat face and the bevelled/curved edges. The reflections on the front sharp face should be flat and straight. I'll try without the meshsmooth (its getting late and my brain is fried - perhaps a fresh look tomorrow!)

Very strange this. In the viewport, the bevelled mirror looks fine. The shading on the curved bevel looks great. However, when I apply my mirror material to it and render, the bevel is faceted. What settings should I be looking at? Its as though the ray tracing is being overly optimised for this geometry.

It looks like the meshsmooth is turned off in that render.
