  • Microsoft surface screwed my external

I usually use my WD external drive on my home computer with win7 on it then i plugged it into a surface with windows 8 and for some reason it deleted a whole crap load of files. Im back on my win7 machine now and trying to do a restore on the drive (taking forever to scan the drive, its 2 tb) Anyone ever had this happen?

Sounds like a nightmare; I am sorry that happened to you. I haven't heard anything about that being an issue.

you can have a look at the demo of this and see if it finds more files

just make sure you don't write anything new to the drive

This is why I always use save removal tool in windows to disconnect my USB devices instead of just janking off the usb cable.

My guess is that since SurfacePro doesn't provide enough power for some of the larger external drives it messed up the file system while initializing. None of my 2TB 3,5" external drives even show up when plugged in, only the smaller 2,5" drives work with it. If it's a 3,5" drive, they'll need an external power source, USB only will not be enough.
