iges files and max are a bad mix. max does not import half the entities correctly. using powersolids to import is a good option, but unfortunately CATIA's iges implementation is sufficiently lack lustre to make this unusable most of the time (at least on my models)
deep exploration has a new CATIA module, but there is no V5 support as of yet, and your object will end up as polygons when it gets to max(though you get a nice clean mesh from what i have seen)
i tend to use STL. it gives a crappy mesh, and takes ages to import into max, but it always works.
