  • Asset library software

I am looking for a good, stable asset library manager for our ever growing library of 3D models (and textures/lights etc if possible). The built-in Asset Browser seems clunky.

ForestPro was brought to my attention for this kind of thing. I had a quick try, and unless I have completely misunderstood, it seems that this would mean every asset in my scene (a chair, a bed, a pillow, a toaster...) would be a ForestPro object. I don't want this.

'tooves' suggested http://3d-kstudio.com/project-manager/ which I installed as a demo, and it seems pretty good. However, it has crashed on both occasions of using the demo, so I am not prepared to sink money into that software (especially as it is a license-per-user arrangement).

    Any other solid suggestions?
    Kind Regards,

    Hi Richard,

i am building my asset library with this software:

    http://connecterapp.com/

These guys are unbeliaveble. Design, functionality, speed, easy to use, fast development.
I`m very happy with this software. Although it is beta it is very stable and ready to use.
    Best regards,

    Jozef

        maybe this? http://www.neilblevins.com/cg_educat...l_workflow.htm

I remember Neil sharing his progress on this tool months before. I haven't looked at it, although I too want to look into asset organization. I was going to stick to simply separating models into different files and working on a simple naming/organizing convention for them.

Doesn't have to be - just delete the forest object and the pieces will still be merged in on a hidden layer. we use it for browsing assets that wouldn't belong in a forest object all the time.

I've been using Project Manager for 3DS Max for a couple years now. It's a pretty solid solution.

+1 for Project Manager. I am the only one at my company that does 3D, so I don't know how the solutions spans across multiple computers/users, but for my purposes (and for the price)it is great. Overall, it has been pretty stable for me too..i had some instances a while ago where I would get error messages, but it would never crash on me. I think that issue has been fixed (the thing is updated probably once a month on average)

                Pros:
                Works on network folders
It is very easy to save out individual objects from max (it has an option to create a screenshot tumbnail as well)
It is very easy to organize and move files (it has a catalogs option so one file can show up in several different categories if needed)
I often use the batch replace (say you want to change out every instance of chair A with Chair B, it will replace them while keeping the rotations/placement). This is awesome for blocking out a scene and then replacing the blocks with actual models.
It is updated frequently (maybe too frequently...)
It has other built in functionality like finding all objects with missing maps, material browser, etc..

                Cons
it is sometimes slow to load (but I have thousands of models so I guess that is acceptable)
The automatic "render thumbnail" hasn't been so great for me...i usually still render out my own thumbnails manually
