  • best bang for buck cpu at the moment?

as title.. trying to see how i can cost effectively boost my rendering speed.. unfortunately gpu isnt cutting it for me yet.. which cpus currently offer the best bang for the buck?

on a related note can somebody please find a way to get around the GPU memory limitations?! id happily take a chunky performance hit if i could use system ram or unify ram on multiple cards. im sure im not alone. i dont see 32gb gpus coming any time soon, for less than the price of a small car.

hm.. related to this. integrated gpus on cpus.. i assume you can choose how much system ram they can use... any of them usable for rt gpu? i guess not cos none of them are nvidia

I just built a new box with an Intel i7 5820K CPU which was priced not to bad and absolutely love the performance, and at $495CDN it was priced not to bad.

      -= edit typo to 5820, not 5920=-

According to this chart, it seems to be the Intel Core i7-5930K @ 3.50GH

I looked at that CPU as well and didnt think the 0.2Ghz difference was worth the extra $250 when I bought mine. I also have mine OC'd at 4.2Ghz running very stable.

theres also the eternal issue.. is it better to get a couple of beefy cpus for circa $400 each, or or 8 $100 cpus?

you of course have to figure in the costs of motherboards, ram, hdd's etc.. but at the budget end these things arent so costly.

its more of a renderfarm thing than a workstation thing... ive already got 2x 3930k @4.6ghz for my day-to-day needs

Don't forget that you will have to manage 8 separate nodes if you do the 8 $100 CPU version. 5820k is a good node or workstation CPU, similar to the 4930k a lot of us were/are running but for less $$$$.
